Phillies signed infielder Placido Polanco to a three-year, $18 million contract.
The contract includes a mutual option for a fourth year. Polanco will
make the switch back to third base, a position he hasn't manned since
the 2005 season. The decision will surely be second-guessed throughout
the length of the contract, as the 34-year-old Polanco has seen his OPS
drop from .846 in 2007 to .727 in 2009. For now, at least, Polanco is
an upgrade over Pedro Feliz, who posted a .699 OPS over two seasons in
Philadelphia. Polanco figures to be used as the No. 2 hitter in Charlie
Manuel's lineup, allowing Shane Victorino to become a run-producer
instead of a table-setter.
