Brewers' rotation proving to be strength

In Spring Training, the Brewers' starting rotation looked like a weakness. Instead, it has proven to be a strength.

The Brewers headed to Pittsburgh tied with the Pirates for the Major League lead in quality starts, defined as six or more innings with three or fewer earned runs. Both teams made it 16 quality starts on Monday, when both Yovani Gallardo of Milwaukee and Paul Maholm of Pittsburgh met the standard.

"It's a lot easier to play the game when it's there for the taking," Brewers center fielder Mike Cameron said. "That's a tribute to our starting pitching and the defense we're playing behind them. We're starting to really find our team."

Not bad for a staff that was supposedly going to be a weakness in the wake of CC Sabathia's and Ben Sheets' free-agent departures.

Braden Looper was the only addition to a staff counting on Gallardo, 23, and Manny Parra, 26, to move to the front of the rotation, and veterans Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan to stay steady.

"
We got asked a lot in Spring Training about replacing the guys we lost, and as I said back then, we weren't going to replace those guys," Bush said. "At the time, we had two of the best pitchers in the game on our staff, so that's a situation we weren't going to replicate. The key for all of us was being a little bit better than we were last year.

"It's early, and we're all going to go through ups and downs. But for the most part, we've been consistent and we're giving our team a chance to win. ... We're trying to be the pitchers that we are and not trying to be the guys we don't have anymore."
