Kenshin Kawakami

Kenshin Kawakami faced live hitters Saturday for the first time since he arrived in the United States.

"What he did today, I liked a lot," manager Bobby Cox said. "He was impressive. From what I saw today, I was happy. The velocity and stuff was good." Gregor Blanco, Josh Anderson and Brandon Jones made solid contact against him, but Kawakami was throwing primarily fastballs at less than full strength. Japanese pitchers are used to beginning the regular season in March, so he's having to pace himself.

Manny Ramirez

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, talks have picked up between the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras.

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said he has had more conversations with Boras "in the past seven days than in the past few months. The conversations are more frequent and longer." It sounds like progress to us.

Joe Crede

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Joe Crede has agreed to terms with the Twins on a one-year, $2.5 million contract

Crede can earn an additional $4.5 million through performance-based bonuses. Those incentives begin to tick once he reaches his 250th plate appearance and top out at his 525th plate appearance. Crede will work as the starting third baseman for the Twins, as long as he's healthy. If there's a problem, Brian Busher and Brendan Harris would have to step in.

Juan Cruz

According to MLB.com, the Twins could be on the verge of landing reliever Juan Cruz.

The Twins have reportedly made a contract offer to the right-hander as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Diamondbacks. Cruz went 4-0 last season with a 2.61 ERA in 57 appearances and won't cost anyone a high draft pick due to the odd dealings. "Obviously, it's tricky," Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said. Chris Carpenter faced hitters Saturday for the first time this spring.

Carpenter reportedly showcased a few excellent diving curveballs and hard sinkers. "I was tickled pink with the way he threw," said pitching coach Dave Duncan. Having Carpenter healthy would be huge for the Cardinals this season.
