Branden Looper
Braden Looper will get a one-year deal with a 2010 option from the Brewers, pending a physical.
The physical will come later this week. Looper's addition means that Seth McClung will head back to the pen, giving the Brewers a lot more flexibility.

Adam Kennedy
Cardinals released second baseman Adam Kennedy.
The Cards will be on the hook for $4 million, less the major league minimum if Kennedy catches on with another team. Perhaps the White Sox will consider him. After factoring in defense, none of the Cardinals' current options to replace Kennedy seem like upgrades, at least against right-handers. The money probably isn't there to sign Orlando Hudson, but Mark Grudzielanek and Ray Durham are both available. Grudzy makes all kind of sense on a team that could use another top-of-the-order guy anyway.

Jeff Weaver
Dodgers signed RHP Jeff Weaver to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Weaver lasted tasted major league success while with the Dodgers in 2005, going 14-11 with a 4.22 ERA. He was 4-6 with a 6.17 ERA for two Triple-A teams last season. Odds are that he'll open this year back in Triple-A.

Rich Aurilia
Giants re-signed infielder Rich Aurilia to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Assuming that there are no further additions, the likeliest scenario has the Giants platooning Travis Ishikawa and Aurilia at first base. Aurilia would also be insurance at third if Pablo Sandoval struggles defensively, but he's no longer much of an option at second or short.

Chad Bradford
The Rays revealed that Chad Bradford underwent elbow surgery on Thursday and will miss 3-4 months.
Bradford apparently began dealing with soreness after beginning his throwing program and needed some loose bodies removed. Since he'll open the year on the DL, there would again seem to be room for either Jeff Niemann or Jason Hammel in the Tampa Bay pen. The team could go with both if Troy Percival joins Bradford on the DL.

Edgardo Alfonzo
Edgardo Alfonzo, who last played in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2006, has signed on with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan.
Alfonzo hit .322/.383/.483 in 242 at-bats in the Venezuelan Winter League, but he wasn't drawing significant interest from major league teams. The 35-year-old spent 2008 playing in Mexico after failing to make the Rangers out of spring training.

Joba Chamberlain
GM Brian Cashman said that Joba Chamberlain will open the season as the Yankees' fifth starter.
That will allow the team to push back his starts from time to time and manage his innings closely. There are no plans to have him spend any time in the bullpen.

Johan Santana
Johan Santana plans to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic at the Mets' request, according to the Daily News.
Another case of a team getting in the way of a healthy player taking part in the WBC. The Mets are able to do so because Santana underwent knee surgery at the conclusion of the season. He'll be ready to go this spring, but the Mets, of course, would rather see him save his bullets for the regular season.
