또 버드의 작품입니다.





1543년생인 윌리엄 버드가 활동하던 시기의 영국은 엘리자베스 1세의 치세였으니, 저 표지의 모델 또한 당연히 엘리자베스 1세가 되겠습니다. 그림은 영국 초상 박물관에 있는 무명씨의 작품이라고 하네요.


음반 제목이 'Great Service'로 되어 있는데 여기서 'great'의 의미는 '위대한, 대단한' 같은 의미보다는 그냥 '대규모'라고 보는 게 당대의 시각이었다고 합니다.

내용 자체는 라틴어로 진행되던 구교 때의 것들과 전혀 차이가 없으며 가사만 영어로 바뀐 거라 생각하셔도 무방하겠습니다.

성공회로 종교를 갈아치워서 온갖 풍상을 거치며 아직 완전히 정착되지 않은 시기의 전례음악으로 만들어진 것이라 한창 나이의 버드가 상당히 의욕적으로 집필했다고. 특히, 새로 등장하는 영어 가사의 명징한 전달을 가장 많이 신경썼다고 한다는데... 뭐, 그러려니 해야지요. 

크게 아침 기도용 둘, 전례 미사용 둘, 저녁 기도용 둘로 나뉘어져 있으며,

O come, let us sing unto the Lord:
let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving

신경 Creed
