아, 너무너무 기분 좋은 오후입니다, 그쵸~~~~~~~~~???

여자도 아니면서 '음악의 어머니'라는 생뚱맞은 별명이 붙어 있는 헨델,
음악사에서 이분의 업적은 어마어마하다지만 가장 큰 걸 들라고 하면 역시 합창음악의 표현력을 넓혔다는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.

헨델의 음악 인생은 크게 영국 체류 이전과 영국 체류 시절, 둘로 나눌 수 있을 텐데요.
그의 영국에서의 작곡 인생은 다시 나누어 이탈리아 오페라 위주의 전반부, 영어 오라토리오 위주의 후반부로 나눌 수 있을 겁니다.

'대륙 최신 음악의 전도사'로서 이탈리아어로 된 오페라로 승승장구하다가 오페라 감상층이 이탈리아어를 이해하지 못하는 중하층민을 포함하게 되면서 영어 오페라-뮤지컬의 할아버지뻘-에 밀려 쫄딱 망한 후 헨델도 영어로 된 작품을 연달아 성공시키며 부유한 말년을 보냈다는군요.

각설하고,
헨델의 합창음악 중 으뜸으로 유명한 것은 당연히 '메시아Messiah'입니다만, 오늘 올리는 곡, 세멜레Semele는 구약성경을 바탕으로 한 여타 종교 오라토리오와는 달리 그리스 신화의 한 에피소드를 소재로 한 '세속 오라토리오'라고 불리는 장르의 곡입니다. 작곡 시기도 메시아와 거의 비슷해 그의 창작 능력이 최고조에 달한 시기의 작품으로 평가받고 있다지요.

바람둥이 최고신 주피터가 인간세계의 여인 세멜레와 바람을 피는데, 이를 못마땅히 여긴 그의 본처 주노가 '세멜레에게 신으로서의 당신 본연의 모습을 보여주라'고 협박성 간청을 하여 그 모습을 보여주었더니 인간 세멜레는 그 모습을 감당하지 못하고 타죽었더라...는 내용입니다.

연주 시간이 거의 세 시간에 육박하는 장대한 드라마에서 네 곡을 추려봅니다.
